Nature’s Veil
Neith, Artemis or Isis, goddesses down through the ages, have depicted Nature as a force that cannot be understood. Auguste Putteman's sculpture, one of many artistic depictions, has Isis sitting on a pedestal covered in a veil. Written on the pedestal beneath her feet is the following inscription: "I am all that has been and is and shall be, and no mortal has ever lifted my mantle." During the Enlightenment, science and philosophy looked towards revealing Nature's secrets. Metaphorically the Enlightenment, and science ever since have sought to lift the veil of Isis. In our attempts, we often find ourselves at war with Nature rather than in harmony with her. Her warning to us against our hubris often goes unheeded. As the veil on Samhain grows thin between two worlds, the Anthropocene thins the veil between the epochs. Looking upon nature we feel the harmony and energy of constant creation. Looking through nature to our world we get glimpses of our folly, destruction and chaos. Our attempts to lift the veil has opened the cracks of darkness that is growing around us.
