Tidal Zone
Through the heart of a city often there runs a river and often it is tidal. This series explores a 50-kilometre Fraser river intertidal zone that runs through the lower mainland of Vancouver, BC. The provinces governance only extends to the high tide mark of the river, leaving the tidal zone within Canada but not within British Columbia. In this jurisdictional lapse adjacent to highrises and freeways there is creative and alternate space in which people live and work. A space that is dramatically different from its urban surroundings.
This series explores, among other places, one of these alternatives communities a century old Finnish fishing village, that has been transformed into a community of artists living among the last remaining descendants of the original fishers. The buildings are the traditional sheds, houses and boat house buildings some over a hundred years old. The buildings are being maintained by remaining Finnish community. The maintenance includes the process of raising the buildings to accommodate sea level rise.
